The Soldier
He gets up in the morning
Before the sky is light
He puts on the honored uniform
And prepares to go and fight
An M-16 strapped to his back
And a full clip on his belt
The fear in his heart, going to war
Is the worst he's ever felt
He raised his hand and said the words
Swore to protect and obey
With a tear in his eye and pride in his heart
He promised his life that day
He's a soldier
His shoes are polished to a mirror shine
The brass on his uniform gleams
With sharp, flat creases in his clothes
He's the perfect soldier, it seems
In every home he's ever lived
He's seen Old Glory fly
And he always knew those stars and stripes
Would cover him when he died
He raised his hand and said the words
Swore to protect and obey
With a tear in his eye and pride in his heart
He gave his life that day
He was a soldier
Before the sky is light
He puts on the honored uniform
And prepares to go and fight
An M-16 strapped to his back
And a full clip on his belt
The fear in his heart, going to war
Is the worst he's ever felt
He raised his hand and said the words
Swore to protect and obey
With a tear in his eye and pride in his heart
He promised his life that day
He's a soldier
His shoes are polished to a mirror shine
The brass on his uniform gleams
With sharp, flat creases in his clothes
He's the perfect soldier, it seems
In every home he's ever lived
He's seen Old Glory fly
And he always knew those stars and stripes
Would cover him when he died
He raised his hand and said the words
Swore to protect and obey
With a tear in his eye and pride in his heart
He gave his life that day
He was a soldier
